Scope note
Oleaginous liquid derived from coal tar that is widely used as a wood preservative because it is toxic to wood-destroying organisms. It is commonly applied to utility poles or pilings. It is dark in color and has a characteristic odor. Wood treated with coal tar creosote cannot be painted, and is not used in interior applications or on finished lumber.
